Melfort Secret Santa brings joy to seniors in the community

If you’re looking for a way to spread holiday cheer this season community members can take part in the Melfort Secret Santa for Seniors.

Until Dec. 10, you can pick up a Christmas bulb at Daisies Dreams and Decor, Melfort Liquor store and Home Hardware.

“They can pick three items that they need or something that would help them feel the Christmas spirit,” said Cassie Davis, founder of the project.

Their wish list goes onto the bulb and is hung on a Christmas tree at participating locations for members of the community to pick up.

Seniors in the community are invited to participate through a variety of sources such as care homes and community submissions.

Melfort Secret Santa for Seniors is celebrating its seventh year in operation. Davis said this year will be the biggest yet.

“We usually take 125-150 seniors. We have taken on an additional 105 seniors. Which is nearly double of usual years.”

The project is also looking at potentially expanding to surrounding areas such as Tisdale.

For those wanting to participate, visit one of the participating locations to pick a senior you would like to send a gift to.

Items needed vary based on the requests of the senior which also influences how much fulfilling a wish list will cost.

“It can be as cheap as $20 for all three items. You can always find a senior in your price range.”

Typical items on a wish list include grocery items, personal care items and winter goods such as a toque, mittens or scarfs.

Once you are done shopping for your senior, you can bring your items back to where you picked up your bulb from.

Gifts need to be wrapped prior to drop off and have the bulb attached to act as a name tag. Both Davis and co-organizer Chantell White, will ensure the presents are delivered to the chosen senior during the holidays.

Davis said the project is about more than just spreading Christmas cheer.

“It’s very important that we remind our seniors that they are very much cared for by the community as they are the pillars of our community.”
