Local volleyball teams have early success at provincials
With the remaining four categories of Saskatchewan High School Boys Provincials underway in Saskatchewan, several schools in the northwest are already in the win column.
In the 4A tournament in Moose Jaw, Carpenter High School from Meadow Lake had three straight sets victories over E.D. Feehan from Saskatoon, Humboldt and Melville. Coming off of injuries to key players, the squad was able to overcome that adversity and win regionals the previous weekend.
John Paul II Collegiate, the team that lost to Carpenter in the regional final, are also 3-0 in their round robin, after sweeping Tisdale and Moose Jaw’s A.E. Peacock and topping Vanier from Moose Jaw 15-12 in a third-set tiebreaker. They’re seeking to join their female counterparts, who finished second in the 4A girls championship a week ago. Both schools have one match remaining this evening and will play their remaining pool matches at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.
The 2A host St. Walburg Saints are off to a strong start, with a 2-1 win over Cornerstone Christian from Moose Jaw and a sweep of Harvest City from Regina and Meath Park. Maidstone split their first two matches in the opposite pool, while Wilkie is 2-0 and was leading in their third match Friday evening.
