A local former NHL standout has come back home and opened up a business designed to bring the community together throughout any time of year.

Meadow Lake’s own Dwight King recently opened Kingdom Golf in downtown Meadow Lake, a virtual golf experience that allows fans and first timers to get on the green whether the courses are cleared or covered in the heavy Northern Saskatchewan winter snowbanks.

Speaking with meadowlakeNOW, King said the sport played an important role in his fitness routine.

“For myself, golf has always kind of been my pastime when I was playing [hockey], coming back here in the summer and having the time available to me,” he said.

“I trained in the morning usually, before the family, but I’d have the whole afternoon to find a way to be active. For me, it was easy. It’s friendly, it’s still competitive, and you can socialize and get outdoors.”

While it may not be the real thing, the virtual program offers a similar experience that wasn’t previously available in the community.

Despite spending time in Los Angeles, Montreal and several other markets, King said coming home to raise his family and start his business was always a part of his plan.

“It never really crossed my mind to move anywhere I played,” he said.

“Just being able to travel around and experience different situations and different settings was nice. The older I got, when my kids started traveling with us, it got a little tougher on them to be on the go all the time and not have a friendship that’s going to be there every school year.”

With assistance from his wife and some financial support from the Clarence Campeau Development Fund, a program designed to stimulate economic development with Metis-owned businesses, King brought his dream to life and opened Kingdom Golf in mid-November.

He believes the business provides the community with another source of entertainment and recreation that can help people come together and build connections.

He added the facility fills the void for golf fans in the community created by the lengthy winter seasons.

“There’s room for any level of player, which is nice, and then as far as giving another social avenue for the people, it’s been a long couple years,” he said.

“There’s not a lot to do as far as reconnecting in the community, bonding and making life experiences. This is another building, I feel, that Meadow Lake kind of needs.”

“I think a lot of people would just enjoy the social aspect, even if they’re not big golfers, because it doesn’t need to be competitive. It could be just plain and simple fun. It’s exciting to see if people can see the same way my vision of the business would be.”

Now that he’s back home, King feels he also has an opportunity to give back to the community and help today’s youth develop into better athletes.

“Giving my kids a chance to grow up in the same kind of lifestyle I did could benefit them and make them good individuals,” he said.

“On the flip side of that, helping anybody in hockey like I’ve kind of done for the last year and a half, I think it would be beneficial to show them the work you have to put into to be successful in sport.”
