North Stars shoot for eighth straight in wrap of weekend swing

Nov 27, 2021 | 3:00 PM

Coming off back-to-back wins over Notre Dame and Estevan, the Battlefords North Stars will look to wrap a perfect three-game road swing Saturday night, in Weyburn.

Team outlook

In search of their eighth straight win overall, the team has been playing their best hockey of late, and with a 17-6-2 record, sit third overall in the SJHL standings with 36 points.

The Stars are tied in points with second-place Estevan, and just two-back of league-leading Humboldt heading into Saturday’s game.

Weyburn enter play 12th overall in the 12-team league, with a 6-14-3 record. However, coming off a big shootout win over their division-rivals from Melville, the team will be hungry to string together some wins in the midst of their own three-game home stand to close the month.

Players to watch

Steven Kesslering has been a force for the North Stars of late, with three goals, five points over his last three games, after scoring again Friday in Estevan. With a team-leading 12 goals this year, Kesslering also sits second in Stars’ points, with 25.

Holden Doell has also been on a tear of late, with two goals and five points over his last three games since returning to the lineup against Nipawin.

The North Stars will also receive a boost to the lineup Saturday, as forward Ty Bahm will make his season debut, after missing the first 25 games recovering from offseason surgery. Bahm will draw into the lineup on the fourth line with Trevor Kennedy and Colby Bear. (Martin Martinson/battlefordsNOW Staff)

Weyburn are led into play by defending SJHL Forward of the Week, Drew Kuzma. The 6’4, 210-pound forward scored a hattrick against La Ronge last weekend, and now has 15 points in 21 games this year.

Wings captain, Braden Bernie is also one to watch, with a team-best 17 points this year. Fresh off of scoring his eighth of the season last night, the veteran winger has scored three goals, five points over his last five games.

Special Teams

Staying disciplined will be a key point of emphasis for both teams Saturday night, as both the Stars and Wings have a top five power play in the league.

The North Stars, who rank third on the power play, clicking at 24.4 percent, have now scored on 10 of their last 16 opportunities, while Weyburn, who sit just back, are converting at a 20.5 percent rate (5th).

On the penalty kill, the teams are ninth and 11th overall, at 77 (Battlefords) and 75 percent (Weyburn), respectively. Though again, the Stars have been improved of late, allowing just a single power play goal against over their last 15 kills.

Goaltending

In goal, Lowen Kenyon will make his second career SJHL start for the Battlefords. The 17-year-old stopped 29 of 30 shots-against for the win in his debut versus Kindersley earlier this month. Kenyon has a 1.00 goals-against average and .967 save percentage.

Weyburn are likely to turn to Dazza Mitchell, after the Regina product received a night off, Friday. In 10 games this season, Dazza has posted a 3.53 goals-against average and .892 save percentage.
