Hawks return home with three points on weekend road trip

The Hawks stymied Yorkton Saturday night but unfortunately for Nipawin their offense couldn’t bust through in a 1-0 shootout loss.

This was the first meeting of the season between the two Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) teams. The clubs played a classic best of seven series in the 2019 playoffs that the Terriers won in seven games, the last regular season meeting was Feb. 11, 2020. The most recent matchup provided significantly less spark.

Offensive opportunities were limited but the Hawks did pick up a point in the loss. Head Coach Doug Johnson said his players couldn’t take advantage of what chances the team had.

We generated a few chances, we just didn’t finish,” Johnson said on the postgame show. “We have a partial breakaway and get our pocket picked, we have a nice two-on-one, make a beautiful pass on the tape, can’t find the back of the net.”

Yorkton goaltender Kael DePape made 21 saves for the shutout, the second of his career. Chase Hamm stopped 27 shots through regulation and overtime, Clay Sleeva was the lone shooter in the shootout to beat either goalie. Nipawin’s Andrew Schaab, Joel Mabin, and Dawson Brace all failed to beat DePape giving the Terriers the extra point and moving them one point up on Nipawin for the final playoff spot.

“We’re one game under 500, by no means are we in a bad spot, but we’re not having the sustained success that we’d like. We haven’t had the offensive breakouts we’d like. It’s going to get there, we’ve mentioned it’s a marathon, not a sprint,” Johnson added.

Despite perhaps playing too cautiously at times on Saturday Johnson continues to see growth from a team that dresses a younger line up on a nightly basis.

Tonight, we didn’t beat ourselves, we had some turnovers, we’re going to have those. We weren’t turning pucks over in bad spots, we weren’t giving up odd man rushes. We created a few, did we create enough? That’s debatable but we’re getting there,” he said.

Nipawin will host the Estevan Bruins on Tuesday at the Centennial Arena.
