Stars fall to Weyburn in OT; take five of possible six points on trip

Nov 28, 2021 | 12:54 AM

The Battlefords North Stars wrapped up their three-in-three road swing Saturday, falling 4-3 in overtime, to the Red Wings in Weyburn.

K.T. Walters scored a pair for the Stars in the loss, while Jake Southgate added another, and goalie Lowen Kenyon made 34 saves for the team.

Weyburn’s Nikolas Sombrowski led the way for the Wings, scoring two goals including the overtime winner, while Kirk Mullen and Ty Mason added a single goal apiece.

Goaltender, Jackson Fellner was also crucial for the team, stopping 29 of 32 shots for the win, including several breakaway chances by the Battlefords.

Mullen’s first of the season made it 1-0 Red Wings, just 1:51 into the first period. Scoring early on home ice on teddy bear toss night, the goal not only put the Wings ahead early on, but prompted a flurry of stuffed animals to rain down to the ice and get the crowd into the action.

The lone goal of the opening frame, the game remained a 1-0 contest until midway through the second, when Mason made it 2-0 Wings. The hero from Friday’s shootout win over Melfort, Mason’s second of the season gave the team an insurance marker to work with.

However, the multi-goal lead would not last long. Just 30 seconds later, Walters answered back for the Battlefords, cutting the deficit to 2-1 on a quick wrist-shot high short-side from the left slot. The goal marked Walters’ first of the night, and ninth of the season.

Early in the third Southgate drew the Stars even, wiring home his 12th of the year on a slap shot from the left half-boards, to make it a new game at 2-2. Walters’ second then made it 3-2 Stars, giving the team their first lead of the night on his’ 10th of the campaign.

Inside the final four minutes Weyburn took their turn to tie the game, drawing even 3-3 on Sombrowski’s first of the game and 10th of the year, on a power play one-timer.

Sombrowski’s second came in the extra frame on a crisp wrist-shot, perfectly placed glove-side, for the OT game-winner making it a 4-3 Wings final.

The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak for the North Stars, although the team does still pick up a single point in the overtime loss. Taking five of a possible six points on the road trip, the Stars improve to 17-6-3 on the season.

With 37 points this year, the Stars now sit just a single point back of Estevan and Humboldt atop the league’s standings with 38 points this year.

The North Stars will now get a week off, before returning to action next Saturday, Dec. 4, at home against Notre Dame. The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m., with puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
