Rocking in the new year

Melfort Curling Club to host first bonspiel in nearly two years

It’s been a long time since the Melfort Curling Club was last able to host an event or bonspiel due to restrictions caused by the pandemic.

This New Year’s Eve, however, will put an end to the hiatus as the club is putting on a ‘Food and Curling Bash.’

On Dec. 31, there will be four-end mini spiels, supper, midnight lunch, music, prizes, 50/50 and more, as the club looks to ‘rock’ in the new year.

Kerrie De Gooijer, board member and event organizer for the Melfort Curling Club told northeastNOW this will be similar to an event they’ve hosted in the past.

“This is kind of building on a similar bonspiel we’ve had before on St. Patty’s for the past four years, excluding last year of course,” she said. “We’re kind of building on that and hadn’t heard of anything going on on New Year’s Eve, so we thought let’s do it.”

De Gooijer said COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place and that means anyone who enters the building has to be vaccinated. She said although the spiels are a part of the evening, fun outweighs competition when it comes to the four-end games.

“They’re not serious at all and it’s a very low-pressure setting. Most people who curl in these things either haven’t curled before or haven’t curled in a long time. It’s just a fun setting where they can come on out. If you don’t want to curl, we’re going to have supper, the lounge is open and it’s just an opportunity to get together and hang out,” De Gooijer said.

The event will also provide a bit of a financial boost, although De Gooier said the club wasn’t affected too badly during the pandemic thanks to community support.

“I hope we get a big turnout. We’ve had a really big uptake and have sponsors that are helping us out. It’s great to see support from the business community as well. It’s been fun to plan and it’s always fun to host, so I don’t expect any different this time around,” she said.

“To actually be able to host a curling event, however, is another thing. We’re excited to be able to offer the opportunity for people to come on out.”

The event is only available to those 19 years of age and older. For more information, you can visit the Melfort Curling Club Facebook page.
