Vandals destroy and steal from the Humboldt Festival of Lights display

Humboldt’s Festival of Lights is missing a little bit of magic after vandals took decorations and vandalized a display.

Brent Fitzpatrick, executive director of the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce, said that the theft must have been premeditated.

“They took an entire display, except for one piece which they destroyed. The decorations were made by the folks at Futuristic Industries,” Fitzpatrick told northeastNOW. “There were a couple of seven-foot tall Christmas trees that weigh a ton.”

The Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce is currently working on trying to replace the display.

Fitzpatrick said if anyone knows where the missing decorations may be or who is behind the vandalism to contact the RCMP.

“We are pressing charges. We are going forward with this. There has to be a lesson learned.”

Despite the inconvenience, Fitzpatrick said that the worst part of the vandalism is who it affects.

“These are decorations made by a non-profit group. We are a non-profit group putting up these displays and then we are giving money to non-profit groups.”

Despite the missing display, the Festival of Lights will continue to spread holiday cheer.

Visitors are welcome to take a magical tour through the festival display while donating spare change.

“We ask for silver donations, at the end of the season we give that donation to a non-profit group,” said Fitzpatrick.

One group is chosen every year, but depending on the turn out there may be an opportunity to donate to multiple organizations.

According to Fitzpatrick, the best way to enjoy the holiday tradition is by taking your family for a drive through the display.

“You are more than welcome to go for a hike through the campground but it would be best if you drove.”

For those still doing their Christmas shopping, the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce wants to remind everyone to support those in the community.

“All of your holiday gifts are sitting in your local stores, they are not stuck off the coast of California,” Fitzpatrick added. “This is the time where we need to support local businesses when over the past year they have been supporting you.”

Visit the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce on Facebook for more information about the Festival of Trees and other upcoming events.

From now until Jan. 8, 2022, visitors can stop by the Humboldt Campground and enjoy the holiday light displays donated by local organizations.
