Nipawin is celebrating the Christmas season with a free event in the community.

On Dec 3, Dec 10 and Dec 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., residents can enjoy the sixth annual Nipawin Winterlights display at Nipawin & District Regional Park.

Susan Westgard, co-organizer of Nipawin Winterlights, said planning for this years event started around thanksgiving.

“We work under Nipawin Events Inc.,” Westgard told northeastNOW. “It’s an organization we started way back when we started bringing professional bull riding to Nipawin. We have a huge committee that works with us under that umbrella.”

With the help of the community, sponsors from around Nipawin came together to help sponsor the event.

Top-Notch Pallet donated wood to fuel fires that keep volunteers warm. Nipawin Exhibition Association volunteered where needed. Lake Country Co-op, Diamond North Credit Union and Nipawin Handiworks provided volunteers and kids treat bags with Your Dollar Store with More donating money towards the bags. Tim Hortons Nipawin donated treats for Dec 17.

Nipawin Regional Park donated their site, power and use of the entrance hut. Nipawin Elks organized Santa for the festival. Nipawin Lions Club ensured displays are turned on and off for two of the three nights.

Each night of the event, a new sponsor will be helping spread Christmas cheer to visitors of the display.

“On Dec 3 Lake Country Co-op will be the sponsor, Dec 10 will be Nipawin Tim Hortons and Dec 17 will be a Diamond North Credit Union,” Westgard added. “Their staff comes out to volunteer by taking donations and handing out treat bags.”

Although the event is free to attend, donations are encouraged. After the three nights, the total will be announced and proceeds will go to local non-profit organizations.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no walking tour of the display.

“If they want to take a picture with one of the displays, they can contact one of us (the co-organizers) and we can try to arrange something.”
