The City of Humboldt has announced they have awarded Wastewater Treatment Provider Request for Proposal (RFP) and are moving forward with the design phase.

At a city council meeting on Nov 22, it was announced the Manitoba based company Nexcom had been awarded the RFP for the estimated value of $3,718,800.

Joe Day, city manager for the City of Humboldt, said this project has been something the city has been looking into for a while now.

“A few years back the city recognized the currently wastewater processing system, the lagoon system, was nearing both capacities as far as treatment capability and actual rationing capability population limiting size.”

The RFP allowed the city to select a qualified supplier for design and implementation of the upgrades.

“We did a preliminary design two years back. We utilized that to apply for grant funding which we received preliminary approval for,” Day added. “We are currently in the detail design where we look at the finer details of how to set up, layout and what treatment capacity it can achieve.”

Day said that the city is a bit behind where they had hoped to be at this point but remains hopeful that the project will remain on track.

“We are hoping that detail design will be completed in spring of 2022. We could see some construction starting in summer or late fall of 2022 at the earliest.”

Although the project is early in the design process the city does not expect any interruptions to residents once construction does being.

The upgrades are intended to promote growth in the city and improve the quality of water the city is able to provide to existing residents.

“Our current lagoon system does a very good job for what it is expected to do,” Days added. “It’s a win-win on two aspects and we are looking forward to the enhancements.”
