Hawks host Wolves Friday

Dec 3, 2021 | 1:12 PM

The Nipawin Hawks will begin a home-and-home series with the La Ronge Ice Wolves Friday at the Centennial Arena.

The Hawks come into the weekend licking their wounds from a 6-0 drubbing courtesy national Junior A championship host the Estevan Bruins on Tuesday night on home ice. Head coach Doug Johnson said nothing positive came from the effort in that contest.

“Other than it’s over, not a whole lot,” Johnson said after the loss. “It’s over, we’re going to chalk it up as no more and go from there.”

The Hawks have had success against La Ronge this season, in four meetings between the clubs Nipawin has won every game by a combined score of 19-9. The Wolves are just a point back of the Hawks who hold down the final playoff spot as the halfway point of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) nears. Johnson said the team simply needs to play better this weekend and moving forward.

“We have been on an okay run, we got three of four points last weekend. We will need to be better than we were on Tuesday, that’s for sure,” Johnson said.

Newly acquired defenceman Ranon Joseph will not play in Friday’s game but the 18-year-old, 6’5” blueliner could play in the backend of the weekend set in La Ronge according to Johnson.

Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on both nights. Saturday’s contest from the Mel Hegland Uniplex will be broadcasted on Saskatchewan’s New Beach Radio beginning 15 minutes ahead of puck drop.
