Meadow Lake RCMP advising community of increased scam calls

Dec 8, 2021 | 5:04 PM

The Meadow Lake RCMP is advising the community of increased scam calls in the surrounding area.

Police say the trend of fraudulent activity recently surged over the last couple of days. A majority of the fraud complaints filed to police involve individuals calling and asking people to make payments over the phone using gift cards.

The fraudster may provide a badge number to imply they are a police officer. They may also request personal information, such as social insurance numbers, and threaten to freeze assets if payments aren’t made.

In a media release, Meadow Lake RCMP Constable Gill Harris advised the community that government agencies and businesses will not call and ask people to purchase a gift cards to pay bills, collect debts or unlock government IDs.

“Anyone can become a victim – you are not alone. Fraudsters can be very convincing and relentless in their goal of taking your hard-earned money,” he said.

“Reporting you are a victim of fraud helps the detachment have a better understanding of the types of crime occurring in our community.”

Anyone who believes they are the recipient of a recent scam call is asked to please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by phone at 1-888-495-8501 or online.
