North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) will host their home junior basketball tournament this weekend at the high school.

A co-ed tournament, the weekend will feature four girls teams and four boys teams, with games alternating between the girls and boys brackets throughout the day Friday afternoon and Saturday.

Head coach of the junior girls, Bryan Cottini said the tournament is something the teams have been looking forward through the early part of the year.

“Obviously with everything that happened with COVID and the kids missing some opportunities that way, there was definitely a buzz in the air about high school athletics booting up again this year,” he said.

“It’ll be nice for parents to have the home tournaments to come and watch their kids and it’s nice for us too, to be able to play in the home gym; so we’re looking forward to the chance to host this weekend.”

Both the junior girls and junior boys’ teams are coming off gold medal performances last weekend in Melfort, where they won all three of their games on their way to tournament titles.

Coach with the junior boys, Andrew Sneddon said the teams will be looking to build on their hot start to the season, when they return to the court again this weekend.

“Our boys are excited to be back playing after we missed out on last season, and there’s a nice excitement for the group we have coming off a solid performance last weekend in Melfort,” he said. “So we’re looking to carry on that winning momentum.”

This weekend will mark the second tournament of the season for the junior boys, and third for the junior girls.

The tournament will open with back-to-back all-local matchups Friday afternoon. The NBCHS junior boys will play their cross-town rivals from John Paul II Collegiate in the first game Friday at 2:30 p.m., followed by the NBCHS and JPII girls’ first game at 4 p.m.
