Snowfall warning for La Ronge, sharp drop in temperature expected in coming days

Dec 14, 2021 | 5:00 PM

Environment Canada is recommending tri-community residents to prepare for below seasonal temperatures that could last until the end of the month.

That’s according to Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Justin Shelley, who said the colder temperatures will arrive in the coming days.

Currently, there’s a snowfall warning in place for La Ronge with up to 15 cm expected by Wednesday morning, but arctic winds will move in soon after. Snowfall warnings are issued when a region is expecting to receive 10 cm of snow or more within a 12-hour period.

“The heaviest of the snow will pass through overnight,” he said. “There might be some lingering flurries tomorrow morning and then it should clear out later on tomorrow morning.”

Shelley explained a cold air mass will then sink into the province bringing below seasonal temperatures across the Prairies. This time of year for La Ronge should have daytime highs about -13 C and overnight lows near -23 C, but the temperatures are expected to be up to -10 C colder.

The temperature in La Ronge is forecasted to be -19 C during the day and – 27 C. Highs are expected to be -22 C and -25 C on Thursday and Friday, respectfully, with lows of -28 C and -33 C.

“Taking a look at some of the extended models, it does look like this cold stretch is going to persist through the Christmas period and into the week after as well,” Shelley said. “By the end of this week, we are going to be in these cold temperatures and that is going to persist most likely through the rest of the month.”

Throughout much of 2021, La Ronge experienced warmer than normal temperatures since at least June. It was the hottest summer on record and the fourth warmest fall.
