‘A perfect fit’: Sharks Pylypow commits to Lakeland College

For Battlefords AAA Sharks forward, Mykayla Pylypow, there has hardly been a winter she can recall that she hasn’t spent out on the ice playing hockey.

Getting her first taste for the nation’s pastime at just five years of age, flash forward to today and the product of Glaslyn, Sask., located just 45 minutes north of the Battlefords, continues to excel at the sport as a veteran of the AAA ranks.

Currently in her fourth year of U18 AAA with the Sharks, Pylypow sits second on the team in scoring with a club-best four goals and seven points this year, earning herself a commitment to Lakeland College for the fall of 2022.

Pylypow said the opportunity to take her game to the post-secondary level is something she’s been working towards, and very much looking forward to.

“I’ve been playing in the AAA league for four years now and it’s always something I’ve wanted to do — to play post-secondary — so I’m just excited that I finally reached that goal,” she said. “It’s a really great opportunity and it’s nice and close to home too, which was a big thing for me.”

Located in nearby Lloydminster, just an hour and a half straight west of her hometown, Pylypow added that, in addition to the close proximity, the school also allows her to pursue an education in social work while playing for a newly-redefined college hockey program.

“It was a big thing that they offered the program I wanted to go into, and it’ll also be their inaugural season with the ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference), so I’m excited to join that league,” she said. “It’s a very good league, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Head coach of the AAA Sharks, Ricci Girolami, said it’s great to see Pylypow get recognized for her standout play with the team, and be able to take her game to the next level.

“Any time any of our kids get to move on to the next level it always promotes the team and shows the organization is getting stronger, and Mykayla is a perfect fit, I think, for Lakeland,” Girolami said. “She brings calmness to the team, and her speed is her biggest asset. She’s a very fast player and gets into scoring zones quick, so I think Lakeland will really utilize that speed.”
