The Nipawin Hawks have two wins in a row after a thrilling come from behind 5-4 overtime win Tuesday in Yorkton.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club has back-to-back victories for the first time since a weekend sweep of the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Nov. 5 and 6. Brody Wilson scored the game winning goal in period number four to secure the win for the Hawks. The 19-year-old Birtle, Man. product said the team felt good after the win.

“It’s just a really good feeling getting back in the win column,” Wilson told northeastNOW after the win. “It was a rollercoaster of a game, lots of ups and downs but the boys battled through it.”

Mkyllan Couture opened the scoring for the Hawks early in the first period with the Nipawin captain’s second goal of the year. Yorkton tied the contest 1-1 before the first period concluded.

The Hawks restored their lead in the second courtesy Rylan Lefebvre’s sixth goal of the season. The Terriers answered again, JD Hall tied the game 2-2 with his first of two goals in the game for Yorkton. Yorkton took their first lead of the game just 37 seconds after Hall tied the contest. Christian Albertson knotted the game at 3-3 with his Nipawin team leading ninth goal of the year. Hall would give the Terriers another lead late in the period with a shorthanded goal.

Nipawin regrouped in the dressing room after a lackluster middle period with just three shots on goal, but the team turned the tables in the final period rifling 12 shots on Bradley Mistol in the Yorkton net. Wilson said the team refocused prior to puck drop in the third period.

“We came back in, we had a talk, we learned some things, we knew we had to do a job and we battled back hard,” Wilson added.

Andrew Schaab finally tied the game with just over two minutes to play in regulation forcing overtime where Wilson ended the game with his seventh goal. He said securing Nipawin’s third overtime win of the year was nice.

“It was a great pass by Carter (Wickenheiser), I just went to the net, went forehand-backhand and it went into the net. It was a great feeling,” he said.

Chase Hamm got the win in net making 23 saves, the Hawks netminder has 10 victories on the year. Mistol stopped 18 Nipawin offerings.
