A van caught fire this morning north of Melfort after colliding with a deer.

Melfort Fire and Rescue responded to the scene two miles outside of the city on Highway 6 just before 9 a.m. Upon arrival, RCMP were already on scene of the fully involved grand caravan.

Fire Chief Shaun Stewart told northeastNOW once the fire was extinguished, crews remained on scene.

“The fire department continued with traffic control after the vehicle had been taken away due to the icy road conditions created when putting out the fire,” Stewart said.

The Department of Highways was called to plow and sand the area. The fire department cleared the scene and returned to Melfort.

The lone occupant of the vehicle was able to escape the fire with no injuries.

On Monday Dec. 6, a car fire near Silver Park was also the result of a collision with a deer.
