City of Humboldt pleads guilty in death of city employee

The City of Humboldt has entered a guilty plea concerning the death of a city employee in 2019.

The city, in a joint submission with the crown, entered a guilty plea in Humboldt Provincial Court on Dec 20.

The charge was under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation of the Saskatchewan Employment Act. The city was fined $133,000.

Mayor Michael Behiel stated in a press release that the fine does not place a financial value on this tragedy.

“Fines are not reflections of the tragic loss of life or the pain and suffering endured by family and friends.”

The charges are concerning an incident that took the life of Ian Irwin, an employee with the City of Humboldt on Sept. 18, 2019.

Irwin was called upon to help connect a property to the city’s water system at an excavation site. Soon after entering the excavation, the trench wall collapsed.

To this day all who worked with Irwin miss him, Behiel said.

“Losing a colleague and a friend is not something any employee or employer should undergo.”

For the safety of everyone, the city urges all employees and employers to follow all safety requirements at their workplace.
