Lights contest fills city of Melfort with Christmas cheer

For the second year in a row, Christmas cheer can be found in nearly every corner of the city of Melfort.

Over 70 homes were nominated in the Christmas lights contest and twinkle tour this year.

Recreation programmer Shannon Marshall told northeastNOW that to see the participation once again from the community was outstanding.

“We were looking for displays that were big or small, we wanted them all,” Marshall said. “Although it is a contest, every house that entered is on the map and so people can enjoy them.”

The city’s top two as chosen by the judges went to 417 Scotia Drive and 203 First Ave. South

On the evening of the official twinkle tour, the public was asked to vote on their favorite display. After tallying the votes, the People’s Choice award went to 102 Hutcheson St.

“We had a lot of votes for that one, so people were really impressed with that display,” Marshall said.

The CiB committee decided to sponsor a fourth prize and that went to 212 Milburn St.

Marshall made a special mention of a couple of the winners from last year which were 413 Caskey Drive and 318 Conley St.

“We had lots of votes in for them again this year and they still scored high on the score cards, both very awesome displays,” Marshall said.

The Kerry Vickar Centre (KVC) was open on Friday night where over 200 cups of hot cocoa were handed out and there was also special guest appearance from Mrs. Claus.

A virtual map can be found on the City of Melfort Facebook page and hard copies can be picked up at the KVC, the pool desk at the Northern Lights Palace or at city hall.

“People can still take it in over this week leading up to Christmas,” Marshall said. “There is a lot of great things to see again this year, and Melfort really got into the Christmas spirit, it is so very awesome.”

Some new, fun, and exciting things are in the works for next year, she said.
