Toneff leaving Broncos coaching staff

The Humboldt Broncos will be missing a vital part of their coaching staff when they come back to play in 2022.

Assistant coach Curtis Toneff has taken a head coaching position in British Columbia with the Merritt Centennials of the B.C. Hockey League, effective immediately.

Toneff started in Humboldt during the 2019/2020 hockey season.

“Curtis has been instrumental in the development of our players and his hard working approach will lead him to nothing but success in Merritt,” said head coach Scott Barney in a recent press release. “We would like to thank Curtis for his 2.5 years in Humboldt and are excited to see him get the opportunity he has worked very hard for and wish him nothing but success.”

Toneff said he will be cheering on the Broncos “from afar.”

“Working alongside Scott and the Broncos staff everyday was amazing and always full of laughs and positivity behind the scenes,” Toneff said. “Humboldt has done an amazing job making the team such a desirable place to play and coach and I will miss it a lot.”

Both Toneff and Barney had previously had their contacts extended by the organization.

The Broncos are currently 23-8-0-0 as they wrapped up 2021 last week.

The search is on for Toneff’s replacement as the Broncos look to continue this success into the second half of the season.
