Mustangs close out 2021 on winning note against Nipawin Hawks

Jan 1, 2022 | 1:52 PM

The Melfort Mustangs continue to be the hottest team in the SJHL.

This is after their 6-4 win over the Nipawin Hawks on New Year’s Eve at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.

Dawson Leroux scored a pair of goals in what was the Mustangs’ eighth win in a row. Leroux said he and his linemates were really clicking all night.

“My linemates were really good again today,” he said. “[Trenton] Curtis, and Seth [McCulloch], we’ve been going pretty good lately.”

The Mustangs held a 2-1 through one period of play thanks to Tye Scherger and Ben Tkachuk, but the second period, as it has numerous times this season, bit the Mustangs. They would be tied at 4-4 through two periods. Leroux would score both of his goals in that period.

That second period also saw a change in net for the Mustangs as James Venne was pulled after the fourth goal halfway through the period, making way for Joel Favreau’s first appearance since Nov. 12.

“I thought we had a pretty good 10 in the first 10 minutes,” Leroux said. “Then we kind of took the foot off the pedal a little bit. But we had a good second intermission and got it done in the third.

Noah Wilson, and Tkachuk would each score in the second to put the cherry on top of the Mustangs performance which holds them stead in third place in the SJHL heading into a New Years Day affair in Nipawin.

All the action for that game can be heard on 105 CJVR with Mat Barrett starting with the pre-game show at 7:15 p.m.
