Sandbags fundraiser continues through winter

Jan 4, 2022 | 9:00 AM

The North Battleford Part-time Firefighters Association is once again holding its annual sandbags fundraiser.

People can purchase a sandbag for their vehicle to have more stability on the roads for winter driving.

The sandbags are available for purchase at K and K Glass in North Battleford. All proceeds will benefit local charitable organizations.

Jonathon Kadler, President of the North Battleford Part-Time Firefighters Association, said the project, now in its fourth year, continues to be a great success, with many residents dropping in to make a purchase and several local businesses having purchased sandbags to re-sell at their shops.

“We’re very happy to see people are willing to donate, and to also pick up the bags for donation, knowing that it is going to a good cause,” Kadler said. “This is [something] we thought to do for the winter-time to give back to the community.”

The Part-time Firefighters Association makes up the bags with sand donated by North Battleford’s Ken & Terry’s Construction Ltd. The group will also deliver the sandbags if requested.

Last year, the association wasn’t able to get together to decide which charitable organization to give the proceeds from the fundraiser, due to the pandemic. As a result, they will give both the 2021 and 2022 donations, as a lump sum, and announce the recipients before the campaign is over.

“We will just give out a larger portion this year, and hopefully it will make that much more of a difference,” Kadler said. “It will stay within the community.”

Sandbags are $5 each and weigh about 50 lbs. The fundraiser will run throughout the winter and wrap up in the spring.
