Third consecutive Ice Wolves game postponed for COVID-related reasons

Coronavirus has stricken members of the Melfort Mustangs leading to the postponement of tonight’s game in La Ronge against the Ice Wolves.

“They have some COVID cases on the team and it was enough for them that they wouldn’t be able to ice a hockey team tonight,” Ice Wolves board member Randy Johns said in an interview with larongeNOW Tuesday afternoon. “We were contacted earlier about an hour or less. The Melfort Mustangs did a short press release.”

The media release issued by the Melfort Mustangs states the team will be pausing for a minimum five-day period due to COVID, and they will continue to follow the direction of public health during this time.

This marks the third postponement for the Ice Wolves in the last week with back-to-back games against the Flin Flon Bombers also being delayed. Those games were scheduled for New Year’s Eve in Flin Flon and New Year’s Day in La Ronge.

At least four players of the Ice Wolves come from the United States and another is from Mexico. Johns noted the two games against Flin Flon were postponed to allow extra time for testing following the return of international players.

“They had a test before they went to United States and then had a test before they came back to Canada. We had one guy test positive in the United States and so he had to stay for an extra five days until he could clear,” Johns said. “I don’t know what Flin Flon’s situation was, but I know they had people returning from the United States as well.”

Johns explained the Ice Wolves will continue to follow protocols set out by the provincial government and Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He said players are tested daily and he’s hopeful the postponed games can be played at a later date.

“As far as we know, the Friday game is still on but as evidenced today, things can change really quickly,” Johns said.
