Tropical Inn accepting donations for fire victims

Jan 4, 2022 | 5:58 PM

The Tropical Inn hotel in North Battleford is accepting donations to help the victims of the apartment complex fire early Monday morning.

Firefighters responded to a fire at the three-storey building located on the 1400 block of 102nd Street in North Battleford that left a number of individuals with injuries.

Jamie Jackson, of The Tropical Inn, is helping coordinate the donation effort.

Jackson said people have been dropping off clothing and other items to help the victims who lost their belongings and their home in the blaze.

She noted victims are staying both at the Tropical Inn and the Travelodge North Battleford, with support from the Canadian Red Cross. So plans are to take some of the donations to the Travelodge as well.

“Then, they [those staying at the Travelodge] can have a look at it so that everybody gets some clothes, or whatever they need,” Jackson said.

One woman posted on Facebook Tuesday that she injured herself falling from the third storey balcony in the fire, and would appreciate any help with clothing, shoes and food.

The Tropical Inn has a room set up where it is receiving donations for all the victims.

Jackson said it’s important for the community to do what it can to help the families.

“It’s North Battleford – if you don’t come together, then we’re not a good community,” she said. “You have to stick together in that time of need. It’s -35 [Celsius] out, and people were literally jumping from the third storey balcony and are hurt.”

Jackson said she hopes those who were injured can simply focus on getting better, and not have to worry about the basics like finding clothing and food, with the community’s help.
