For the second year in a row, the local Canadian Tire has raised $30,000 from Toffifee sales for the Rose Garden Hospice.

After Wednesday’s donation the Hospice, which began construction in July, has now raised $3.9 million of its $4 million goal.

Local Canadian Tire owner Malcolm Jenkins said the campaign, which started in October, sold 30,000 boxes with a dollar from each box going to the cause.

“This year there were two flavours (original and double chocolate) so that helped us. We were able to bring in 5,000 of the other one and they went quick,” he explained adding next year there will be a new coconut flavour. “The Hospice campaign is nearly finished so next year we’ll find another charity.”

He hopes to beat this total next year and said the Hospice means a lot to him because it’s needed.

“I lost my wife 11 years ago and she got great care in the palliative ward at the Victoria Hospital when she was in there for a couple of spells and passed away at home which is ideal really for folks surrounded by family,” he said.

“But for those who aren’t a hospice, it’s away from the hustle and bustle of a regular hospital. You got bedpans clanging in the night and sometimes someone’s visiting having a few beers down the hall and it’s not exactly peaceful and restful.”

He added it’s a great thing and for a lot of people it’s a way to die with dignity.

“We all end up the same way and it’s the ideal way, it’s how I want to go. I hope they put a room over there with my name on it,” he laughed.
