Bears battle against Wildcats, but skate away with just one point after two-game set

Jan 8, 2022 | 3:37 PM

Like Friday’s contest between the two sides, the Swift Current Wildcats defeated the Prince Albert Northern Bears 2-1 on Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre.

They did so in regulation this time, after needing a shootout to accomplish the feat on Friday.

The Wildcats were able to strike first in both games. While the Bears were cycling the puck around on the power play, Wildcats forward Kiana McNinch picked the puck up on the wall, wheeled all the way down to the Bears’ slot and beat Paige Fischer with a low shot off the post and in.

The Wildcats extended their lead through Olivia Kirwan, as she scored her first U18 AAA goal with 4:19 remaining in the second period after a scramble in front of the Bears’ goal.

Julia Cey would get the Bears back in the game 5:38 into the third, scoring her team-leading ninth goal as her short-range effort on the power play shot rang the bar before going in.

Both teams kept their goaltenders the same throughout the weekend, and both had excellent showings once again. Paige Fischer made 36 saves on 38 shots for the Bears, while Wildcats’ goaltender Karlee Lehner stopped 29 of 30 shots against her hometown Bears.
