Salvation Army North East Circuit falls short of 2021 kettle campaign goal

Jan 8, 2022 | 8:00 AM

The North East Salvation Army kettle campaign funds have been tallied.

Both Melfort and Tisdale were shy of their fundraising goal this year, but Major Rick Robins said both communities were nothing short of generous.

“In Melfort we were only $3,000 short and in Tisdale we were $7,000 short,” Robins said. “For the circumstances and tough year that it has been, I think we did pretty good.”

In Melfort, $67,000 was brought in while Tisdale raised $8,000.

Each year, the campaign goal is based on what is brought in the previous year.

“What we got last year was our goal and last year was a record year so to fall only this short amount from there is fantastic,” Robins said.

The money brought in at the kettles fund the programs that are offered by the Salvation Army all year.

“We have several programs that we offer for people that are homeless, transporting people for addictions or addictions counseling, it also helps us feed people throughout the year for folks that need,” Robins said. “It helps with the vast number of programs that we do in the northeast here.”

The new year is catchup time for the Salvation Army but that doesn’t mean it isn’t busy. It is quite the opposite of that.

“By mid-January we get quite busy with food and other services that we provide to bridge the gap for those who are waiting for their next cheque from social assistance,” Robins said.

With the next wave in the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more people are turning to the services at the Salvation Army. This week alone, three COVID hampers have been delivered in the northeast by the Salvation Army.

“A big thank-you to the community for their ongoing support over the past 104 years, the dedication and partnership and trust in us to give us the funds we need to help the people in the community,” Robins said.

The Christmas hamper campaign helped over 200 families in Melfort this year and 67 families in Tisdale.
