The Victoria Hospital Foundation is overjoyed after a generous donation towards a campaign for the hospital’s new NICU.

The Foundation announced Tuesday that Kelly and Susi Miller of Prince Albert donated $20,000 to the campaign.

In the fall of 2018, the Victoria Hospital Foundation launched a $5 million campaign to build and equip a state of the art, level 2 NICU for sick babies born in the north. To date, the community and Foundation have raised just over $3 million.

About 10 years ago, Kelly and Susi welcomed their tenth grandchild. Shortly after birth though, the baby required medical attention that was not available in Prince Albert.

“Knowing your child needs specialized care is enough of a burden not to add the complication of being 85 miles from home,” the Millers said in a statement. “Travelling in the dead of a Saskatchewan winter, the expense of missing work and living in a hotel added to the anxiety of the situation. And of course, not having the creature comforts of home only added to the anxiety. We truly have a need for this unit. It has been a long time coming.”

Sherry Buckler, the CEO of the Foundation said they are deeply thankful to the Millers for the donation and their ongoing commitment to local healthcare.

“Their gift will help us to fund a state-of-the-art medication dispensing system for the new Malhotra NICU. It’s this kind of technology that is made possible only because of our donors and community.”

Last summer, the Foundation received two big donations for the Malhotra NICU: A $181,615 gift from Kinsmen TeleMiracle and $58,000 from the Sandra Schmirler Foundation.
