The Battlefords North Stars made a pair of trades Monday, just prior to the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) trade deadline, giving the team a new look at the goaltending position.

The Stars first moved goaltender, Ulrik Roussel to the Campbellton Tigers of the Maritime Hockey League (MHL) for a player development fee, before officially welcoming back familiar face, Austin Schwab between the pipes.

“I think it works out well for both sides,” Stars’ coach, Brayden Klimosko said reflecting on deadline day. “Ulrik’s going to get the chance to play lots out there, and obviously with a couple of banged up goalies here, Austin should help solidify a bit of stability again for us, so we’re looking forward to seeing him again.”

A now 20-year-old product of Snohomish, Wash., Schwab played 18 games for the Stars from 2019-21, posting a 13-5 record, along with a 3.06 goals-against average and .907 save percentage prior to his move to the North American Hockey League (NAHL) to start the year.

In six games with the Lone Star Brahmas, a team based in North Richland Hills, Texas., Schwab posted a 2-3-1 record, with a 2.70 goals-against average and .879 save percentage, with one shutout.

Schwab said he’s looking forward to being able to return to the North Stars, and Battlefords community, for a strong finish to the year.

“I’m really excited to get back up there and get playing again,” Schwab said. “The team is obviously doing really well, and it’s really nice to be able to live with my grandpa up there and have all my family close by; it’s a really special place for me.”

The move also gives Roussel a chance to return closer to home, and back to eastern Canada. Campbellton is located in New Brunswick, just a province over from his hometown of Mont-Tremblant, Que.

In 11 games with the North Stars this season, Roussel posted a 5-4 record, along with a 3.54 goals-against average and .898 save percentage.

Schwab joins a crease in the Battlefords that also includes 20-year-old standout, Michael Harroch who remains sidelined with an upper body injury and 17-year-old, Lowen Kenyon.

The North Stars were initially scheduled to play Tuesday night versus Nipawin, but the game was postponed last week, due to Nipawin’s COVID situation. The Stars are slated to return to action for back-to-backs Saturday and Sunday against Flin Flon.

The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available Saturday on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m., with puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
