Raiders allowed to resume team activities ahead of altered road trip

The latest variant of COVID-19 has an unfortunate habit of wrecking even the best laid plans, and after an impressive 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings, the Prince Albert Raiders had their carefully laid out schedule interrupted by a COVID shutdown.

In keeping with the league’s COVID protocols, the Raiders were among eight teams forced to stop team activities. Those eight teams, however, have now been cleared to resume.

In a release on Monday night, the Raiders announced they had gotten the green light from the league to get back in action. It comes not a moment too soon, as the team is still planning an Alberta road swing this week and into next.

That road swing has had to be re-jigged somewhat as what were supposed to be the opening two games were postponed. Tuesday night’s game against the Edmonton Oil Kings and Wednesday’s match with the Red Deer Rebels were the two games that will have to find a new home on the schedule.

The back half of the road trip has now become the opening half but is otherwise unchanged. The Raiders now start the trip off against the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday, January 14 at 8:00 p.m. Saskatchewan time. The next day, they play a matinee game at 1:30 p.m. local time, 2:30 p.m. Saskatchewan time, against the Calgary Hitmen.

Meanwhile, the game against the Rebels has been rescheduled to Monday, January 17 at 8:00 p.m. Saskatchewan time in Red Deer. The game against the Oil Kings has not yet officially been rescheduled, nor have the two games the Raiders missed on January 7 and 8 against the Swift Current Broncos.

The Oil Kings and Rebels were among the other teams allowed to resume activities last night. The other five teams were the Everett Silvertips, Medicine Hat Tigers, Saskatoon Blades, Spokane Chiefs, and Winnipeg ICE. Lethbridge was allowed to resume team activities earlier than that following their shutdown.

Entering play against the Hurricanes, the Raiders hold a record of 13-17-1-1, which puts them 10th in the Eastern Conference. They are just two points back, however, of Swift Current for the eighth and final playoff spot in the conference. There is a gap of just ten points between the 11th place Hurricanes and the fourth place Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Raiders vs. Hurricanes game will air on 900 CKBI, as will the rest of the road trip. The pregame show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saskatchewan time.
