The U13 Battlefords Barons (2) posted a perfect 6-0 record on their way to the top of the podium over the weekend at the West Central Events Centre in Kindersley.

One of 11 teams from across the region at the tournament, the local club opened their weekend schedule with a 9-1 win over Saskatoon before also topping the Shaunovan Badgers (1) 3-1, the hosts from Kindersley 9-1, and Waldheim 7-3 to close the round robin.

In the semi-final, the Barons again beat the Badgers (1) 4-3, before doubling up the Shaunovan Badgers (2) in the gold medal game as well with a 5-3 final.

Coach with the U13 Barons (2), Travis Florence said it was something special to see the team’s hard work pay off the way it did, with their success throughout the weekend.

“It was a pretty exciting weekend for them all,” Florence said. “It was in jeopardy at one point, as some teams had to drop out [in the days leading up to the tournament], but we were glad to be able to go, and find some good success with it.”

With their perfect weekend showing, the team has now won 23 straight games this season, including three tournament wins and a perfect 9-0 billing in league play this year.

Florence said what makes the team special has been their ability to come together and play for one another as a unit.

“There’s really good chemistry on the team and they really work well together,” he said. “They really play for each other and there’s no selfish players, so I think that’s been a big part of the team’s success.”

This weekend the Barons will look to keep their roll going as the U13s will host their home tournament with games split between Battleford Arena and the Don Ross Arena.

The Barons will play their first game Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Don Ross. They will play at least two more Saturday and another Sunday, with a chance at the playoffs to follow, based on seeding.
