SJHL Broncos welcomes some young blood to coaching staff

The Humboldt Broncos are adding some young blood to the coaching staff after hiring Carter Hansen as the new assistant coach.

At 26 years old, Hansen told northeastNOW he is only a five or six years removed from the players he is now coaching and it has been a short amount of time since he was in their position as well.

“I was sitting in the same seat they were six years ago. So I’m not too far removed from the game and I can hopefully relate to them a bit better and know what they’re going through on a day to day basis and what might be going through their brains.”

Hansen comes to Humboldt most recently from the Regina Capitals of the Prairie Junior Hockey League where he was a member of the coaching staff.

Hansen said while his body has taken a toll from his hockey career his mind is still sharp and he is excited to learn under head coach Scott Barney.

“I was coaching Junior B in Regina there and an opportunity to jump up to the junior ranks was something that definitely appealed to me and then it also doesn’t hurt that Humboldt. Obviously their first place in the standings.”

Hansen started his career with the Moose Jaw Warriors under-18 AAA and WHL Warriors, as well as part of the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge Team Canada during his 2011-2012 season. Following four seasons in the WHL with the Warriors and the Regina Pats, Hansen spent a season in the SJHL, first as a Melville Millionaire before being traded to the Melfort Mustangs for a championship winning season.

Hansen continued his hockey career as a member of the University of Regina Cougars before joining the Lumsden Monarchs of the Highway Hockey League.

Hansen’s employment comes after Curtis Toneff left the Broncos bench for a head coaching position with the Merritt Centennials of the British Columbia Hockey League.
