Guilty plea entered in Gateway Mall stabbing case

Jan 13, 2022 | 5:00 PM

A woman responsible for a fatal stabbing outside Prince Albert’s Gateway Mall, has changed her plea from not guilty to guilty.

Latisha Grumbo appeared in person Thursday at Court of Queen’s Bench in Prince Albert, and entered a guilty plea to manslaughter for the death of Kayla Aubichon in July, 2020.

Grumbo also entered a guilty plea for an unrelated incident that happened in June, 2020, where she failed to remain at the scene of an accident.

Justice Mills has ordered a pre-sentence report and both matters have been adjourned to March 31. It’s expected the facts will be read at that time, as well as sentencing. Crown lawyer Cam Scott indicated a joint submission was likely.

Kayla Aubichon was stabbed in the Gateway Mall’s parking lot area, and later pronounced deceased in hospital.

Roughly three weeks after the incident, Grumbo, who was 19 at the time, was charged with second degree murder. She entered a not guilty plea to that charge in March, 2021, and so the greater significance of Thursday’s hearing is that the families of both women will not have to sit through a lengthy trial.

Outside the courtroom, Crown lawyer Cam Scott was asked by paNOW to explain why the charge was downgraded to manslaughter. He explained upon hearing the facts of the case, the latter charge was more fitting of the crime.

Grumbo’s mother has attended every one of her daughter’s court hearings and was also present in court Thursday, along with another family member.
