The Ice Wolves are taking a minimum five-day break after multiple players tested positive for COVID-19.

“With a bunch of injuries we have and some cases we have, we haven’t been able to play yet, but we’re getting healthy and guys are starting to get off their five-day quarantine,” head coach Kevin Kaminski said. “One guy came back yesterday, and we should have a couple more tomorrow and a few more back on Saturday, so we should be ready to hit the ice.”

Kaminski explained the Ice Wolves could be playing again as early as Jan. 18 to host a regular game against the Flin Flon Bombers. They will then travel to Flin Flon the following day and those two games will make up for the Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 games that were postponed.

So far, the Ice Wolves have postponed five games and there has been 18 games postponed since Dec. 31 across the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Members with the Ice Wolves are required to do rapid tests daily.

“None of our guys have had symptoms who have had it,” Kaminski said. “It’s kind of frustrating when you have no symptoms, but yet you test positive for COVID and you have your shots and everything else.”

Kaminski also isn’t worried about the chances of all league games being suspended, noting Premier Scott Moe announced Wednesday there were no new public health restrictions on the way. Although there is a five-day break from games, he said regular practices are still being held for the players who are healthy.

“The guys have had no symptoms. It’s crazy. It’s a common cold. Let’s play hockey,” he said.
