JPII curling teams hit the ice, begin practicing

John Paul II Collegiate (JPII) returned to the ice this week for the first time in a couple of years to kick off the start of their school curling season.

Still yet to play their first game of the new season, the school held a meeting just prior to the Christmas break to gauge the interest in having a curling team this year. Ten players total as of this time committed to play between what will be two total Crusaders’ teams this year.

Due to numbers, the school with have both a junior girls, and senior mixed curling team, each of which just began practicing this week at the local Twin Rivers Curling Club.

Coach of the curling teams, Cherrelle Cadrain said it’s been great to see students excited about joining the sport this year, with a good mix of new players expected to get a chance to gain some valuable experience.

“I think a big thing is that with some sports you have to try out and there’s cuts, but with curling and our lower numbers, it’s exciting that some of these young curlers are really going to get to play,” she said. “There’s only five on each team, so it’s exciting too for those that may not have had that chance to really play high school sports yet.”

Cadrain added that with at least a couple of more experienced curlers involved as well, it should only help the others along.

“We have a couple of really strong curlers who do some community curling and are on some other teams that do tournaments all over Saskatchewan, so it’s pretty exciting too that some of our local talent is getting the chance to play again as well,” she said.

As someone who has been involved in coaching multiple other school sports teams, Cadrain said they are just grateful to be able to continue to offer these extra-curricular athletic opportunities to students after school sports were cancelled altogether last year due to the pandemic.

“I remember we were really happy to get through a full volleyball season, and now with basketball underway at JPII and curling starting too, it’s nice that nothing’s been shut down and we can continue moving forward with some school sports,” she said. “Giving these students the chance to take part in athletics here, we’re very excited about that.”
