Silvernagle reflects on curling season following Saskatchewan Scotties

The 2022 Viterra Scotties Provincial Women’s Championship wrapped up this week in Assiniboia, signaling the end of the curling season for many of Saskatchewan’s top teams, including Team Silvernagle.

The locally-based rink out of North Battleford’s Twin Rivers Curling Club, opened the tournament with a 7-5 win over Team Schneider, and 9-7 victory over Team Wisniewski, before falling 6-4 to the eventual tournament champions, Team Barker in the semi-final; skipped by Moose Jaw’s Penny Barker.

However, despite their loss to the eventual champs, Silvernagle and her team were able to show good resiliency to bounce back quickly, on their way to defeat Team Howard 7-6 in the C Event.

“We had a pretty good week,” Skip, Robyn Silvernagle said in reflection. “Obviously it wasn’t the result we would have wanted – we would have loved to have been representing Saskatchewan at the Scotties – but overall we had a good week. We played some great games, had some good shots, and I really feel like overall we’re still building as a team.”

The tournament served as the first big competition for Team Silvernagle as currently constructed. The team added a pair of new faces to the fold over the last year, when Silvernagle and third, Jessie Hunkin were joined by second, Kristen Streifel and lead, Dayna Demers.

Silvernagle said she was happy to see the way the team was able to perform in their first provincial tournament as a unit.

“We had some really strong team chemistry out there, we were all in it together, and whether a shot was made or missed we all had each other’s back,” she said. “It was a lot of fun, we really enjoy ourselves out there and love competing, so we’re all sad our season is over for the year, but it was really great to see [the chemistry].”

Team Silvernagle will now take some time to relax and reflect, before coming together again in about a month’s time to talk things over and plan for next season. Practices usually begin again in August, with the new season start in September.

And while the season may have only just ended, Silvernagle said there’s already lots to like about the team’s outlook heading into the fall, 2022.

“We definitely felt like we built a lot this year from where we started, just learning about each other, learning each other’s throws and figuring out that team dynamic, so we put in a lot of hard work this season and will just keep building on that, as we will make it to the Scotties someday,” she said.
