Shooting incident during house party results in prison sentence

Jan 14, 2022 | 5:00 PM

A man responsible for an armed robbery in Prince Albert’s west flat last summer has received a five-year prison sentence.

Colton Laliberte, 26, appeared by video Friday afternoon at Prince Albert Provincial Court, and entered guilty pleas to armed robbery, as well as to two driving-related offences stemming from a matter in Saskatoon that happened two days later.

With respect to the first incident, on Aug. 8, 2021 Parkland Ambulance paramedics responded around 7 p.m. to a reported assault in the 600 block of 13th Street West.

The 42-year-old patient was then transported to hospital in Saskatoon with serious injuries but was listed in stable condition.

According to the statement of facts read in court, Laliberte and the victim had been partying together at a house, which included the use of drugs and alcohol.

The victim was celebrating the recent sale of a snowmobile and had talked openly about the $5,000 in cash he made, most of it left lying around the house.

Carrying a 12-gauge shotgun, Laliberte proceeded to shoot the victim in the leg before grabbing the money and running from the house. The victim was soon after found by his neighbour lying on his doorstep, covered in blood.

Laliberte in turn was located two days later in Saskatoon driving a stolen vehicle. While fleeing from police he crashed into a light post. Inside the trunk of the vehicle, police found a hunting knife, shotgun shells, and a mask in the shape of a skull, but none of these items could be traced back to Laliberte

For the shooting incident, Laliberte received four years and then an extra year for the latter charges related to dangerous driving and fleeing from police.

When given the opportunity to speak, Laliberte told the judge he was feeling extremely remorseful for what he had done, and now simply wanted to move on with his life, which included the completion of his high school education.

Judge Healey was also asked to consider a letter recommending Laliberte serve a portion of his sentence at a healing lodge. Healey indicated he would ask Corrections Canada to consider it.
