The Town of Kinistino announces $6.6 million community centre

A new street feature is coming to Kinistino this fall.

Town officials gathered on the 500 block of Main Street today to share the development updates to the Kinistino Community Centre.

Mayor Mark Powalinsky said that this marks the beginning of an exciting project.

“We are marking the tangible development of the Kinistino Community Centre. It is set to replace the former Legion centre.”

The town has been working on this project since 2019 with former Mayor Leonard Margolis.

Margolis and an anonymous donor dreamed of making a space that could bring the community together and attract new visitors and residents. Powalinsky is happy to make that dream a reality.

“This project has been quite a rollercoaster of a ride but has been a very exciting project to work on.”

The project was originally estimated to be $5.8 million in 2020. As a result of the pandemic affecting construction costs, the project will now cost $6.6 million.

The town wants to thank the provincial and federal governments for their help with this project.

“We have received both federal and provincial government funding so that has been helpful in terms of developments.”

The federal government contributed 40 per cent, and the provincial government contributed 33 per cent of the total cost of the project. The rest of the funding will be supplied by the municipal government.

The centre is scheduled to be completed in September 2022.

Inside the building will host the new town office, a kitchen, a banquet hall with a stage and a new legion room.

As a memorial to the late mayor of Kinistino, the municipal government chambers will be named the Leonard Margolis memorial council chambers.

The banquet hall and legion room will be considered multipurpose rooms that members of the community will be able to rent out for private functions.
