Hawks return to ice as playoff push resumes

Jan 15, 2022 | 4:31 PM

After having 11 days off between games due to COVID-19 cases among the Nipawin Hawks the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club will return to game action Saturday.

The Hawks haven’t played since a 3-2 loss to Flin Flon on Jan. 4. The next day Nipawin shut down team activities due to several players having the virus. Head Coach Tad Kozun has revamped the team since then and is excited for the team to return to game action.

“It’s been a long time, we’re a much different team than we were from our last game. We made some moves at the deadline and got a lot younger. It’s going to be a good opportunity for the young guys to show us what they have got,” Kozun said.

Nipawin come into the game against the Melville Millionaires sitting in 10th place in the SJHL standings. The Millionaires are in seventh place. Kozun said Melvile is a club they need to beat if they hope to make progress and climb back into the postseason race.

“Everyone always says these are four-point games and this is definitely a four-point game for us. We need to get back on track,” he said.

Saturday will mark the Nipawin debut for forward Maquire Ratzlaff, defenseman Brendan Lee and Tre Fouquette will also dress for their first game. Kozun said the push for the playoffs begins now.

“We’re a different team than we were 10 days ago so I am really excited to se how it goes tonight,” he said.

Faceoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Centennial Arena.
