Broncos lose after game contested, follow up with win at home

Tensions were high as the Humboldt Broncos finished up a home and home series with a win against the Melfort Mustangs on home ice.

Fans got an extra bit of Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action as the Melfort Mustangs contested the results of the Jan. 14 game. As a result, the Broncos and Mustangs replayed the last 9:37 with a brand new result.

With two goals from Nolan Doell for the Mustangs, including an empty-netter, the Mustangs took back the W from the Broncos, who had previously won 4-3 in overtime, in a 5-3 win.

New assistant coach, Carter Hansen, told northeastNOW the Melfort team had to do what they thought was right for them.

“At the end of the day, it’s a hockey game. There’s right calls, there’s bad calls, and there’s missed calls. They did what they thought was right for their team and at the end of the day, it worked out for them.”

After some time to cool down and Zamboni doing its thing, both teams were back at it.

The Mustangs would strike first with a goal from Dawson Leroux four minutes into the period but the Broncos would answer back soon after with Alec Saretzky, earning back his 25th goal after contentment of his goal on Jan. 14.

The Mustangs would come out blazing in the second period with two goals in just over three minutes from Marco Lopez and Boston Maxwell, as well as a fight between Maxwell and Bronco Connor Casparie.

Tyler Kutschinski would lessen the Mustangs lead to one midway through the second leaving the game 3-2 going into the third.

Connor McGrath would tie it up only 2:44 into the third, but the Mustangs would answer back less than three minutes later with a goal from Ben Tkachuk.

With the minutes ticking by, James Form, in only his second game with the green and gold found the back of the net to tie up the game, followed by two goals from Sam Marburg.

Goalie Rayce Ramsay stopped a total of 20 out of 24 shots with the Broncos taking 35 shots on goal.

After 37 games with the Humboldt Broncos, Marburg was happy with the team’s performance.

“We needed a couple of goals, especially after that weird game we had earlier, but it was really nice to get a few and our team played good, Rayce played good. Our D was good. It was a good game overall.”

In order to keep their first place in the standings, Marburg said they will have to keep it up.

“Every team is gonna give us our best game of the year and we always got to be ready, we’ve got to be on top of our game all the time.”

With only four at-home losses, the Broncos do make it tough for teams to play on the Elgar Petersen Arena.

“We proved that again tonight. We got down early. We lost that first game and that’s not an easy game to bounce back from but these guys know that. We stay to the systems, we stay to the process that when we’re at home, we have a good chance to win on any night.”

Just recently joining the Broncos, Form is no stranger to many players on the ice. That made the transition a little better as this was only his second SJHL game. Playing close to home has also been a nice change since it is now easier for family and friends to come watch him play in Humboldt.

“Whether it’s a good game or a bad game, they’re there and there’s a certain feeling of support and love that comes with it that I definitely missed when I was away in Winnipeg and Spokane.”

This is the last meeting of the two clubs this regular season and the Broncos will now be preparing for a meeting with Melville on Jan. 18 and Notre Dame on Jan. 20.

Hansen said they have to bring that same intensity against Melfort and take it to Melville, a team they have taken lightly in the past.
