Battlefords Search and Rescue group looking for more volunteers

Jan 17, 2022 | 5:51 PM

Those with an interest in helping others will want to attend one of the upcoming information meetings for Battlefords Search and Rescue (BSAR).

The organization is looking for more volunteers to sign up to increase its membership.

Local chapter president Devin King said BSAR is planning information sessions from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Jan. 18 and 25 on Zoom, and on Feb. 7 in person at the Battlefords Wildlife Federation building in North Battleford.

Anyone interested in attending the virtual event is asked to send an email in advance to: BattlefordsSAR@gmail.com.

“People can come and learn about our organization,” King said. “We tell you a bit about ourselves, [and] what’s involved for time commitment…”

He added people can take in all the information before making a decision on whether they would like to join the group.

Currently the local organization has about 15 members, but has a goal to double that if possible.

“We’ve been around since 2020, so now we’re trying to grow that membership up, to be better sustaining,” King said.

The group meets twice a month, with a Thursday night virtual meeting, then a half-day field training session on a Saturday.

“It’s a great way to get outside and get involved,” King said. “If we are called to action, then we have that training available for doing our search and rescue services.”

BSAR is activated by a request from the RCMP through the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency to assist with searches in western Saskatchewan.

The BSAR organization is a member of the Search and Rescue Saskatchewan Association of Volunteers (SARSAV), which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.

King encourages people to visit the BSAR website for more information about the local group.
