Hawks netminder honoured for weekend win

Nipawin netminder Harmon Laser-Hume was named among the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Players of the Week on Monday.

Laser-Hume, 18, was named the SJHL Rookie of the Week for his efforts in a 4-1 Hawks win on Saturday over the Melville Millionaires. The Creston, B.C. native made 27 stops in the victory, many early in the contest allowing the Hawks to shake off the rust of 11 days off due to COVID-19. Laser-Hume said his approach to the game was different than other nights.

“I went into the game lighter than I normally would to be honest,” he said after hearing the news of the award. “I was relaxed, I have been trying to have more faith in allowing guys to do their jobs and not trying to control so much.”

Nipawin was outshot 12 to seven in the first period of Saturday’s game against Melville, Laser-Hume kept the game close at 1-0 before the Hawks controlled the remaining 40 minutes. With the game 2-1 early in the third period he made a potential game saving stop during a furious Melville attack. Nipawin scored shortly thereafter to seal their 13 win and inch closer to a playoff spot. Laser-Hume said he knew the save was needed.

“It kind of scared me but it was one I knew it was one I had to make. The guys played really well in front of me,” he said.

The win was Laser-Hume’s second of the season. He has five losses in 11 games of action in his first year with the Hawks. He sports a goals-against-average of 3.33 and his save-percentage is .889. His numbers since making the jump to junior A hockey from junior B in his home province aren’t eye-popping but he said the recognition is nice to hear and helps his confidence going forward.

“It feels really good,” he said.

Laser-Hume and the Hawks will host the Estevan Bruins on Tuesday at the Centennial Arena beginning at 7:30 p.m.
