The young Wiesbro steals the show as Tigers surprise Raiders

A Wiesblatt scored a hat trick Saturday night, but the Crazy Train didn’t come off its tracks, nor did the Art Hauser Centre cheer any of the three goals. If anything, they were silenced by them.

That’s because Prince Albert Raiders forward Ozzy Wiesblatt was forced to sit in the press box and miss his third straight game with an injury, watching his younger brother Oasiz Wiesblatt score a hat trick and lead his Medicine Hat Tigers to victory.

Oasiz’s involvement was quite obvious early on, scoring a beautiful backhanded deke goal to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage, 11:58 into the first period. But a few minutes later, Oasiz took a clipping penalty behind the play just as Steven Arp was scoring what would have been the 2-0 goal. Instead, the Tigers were shorthanded and Raider forward Herman made them pay, scoring on a snipe from the left side to tie it up.

Oasiz would then score on the game-winning goal three minutes into the third period on a one-timer during an odd-man rush, before filling the empty net to ice the game.

The Raiders remain one point out of the playoff race with 32 points with their 15-21-1-1 record, while the Tigers improved to 8-25-3-1 with the victory.

“It’s disappointing. We’re playing a team below us in the standings and we’re fighting for points and we don’t get them,” Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid said. “Credit to them, you could tell they lost 9-3 [the night before to the Saskatoon Blades], they came in with a purpose and hungry, more hungry than us, for sure. We missed assignments on some goals, and some goals went in that I didn’t like, and it kind of lead to the score that happened.”

Evan Herman was easily the Raiders’ standout player on Saturday, scoring both of the Raiders’ first two goals, before getting an assist on the third.

“It’s a tough one. I don’t have a lot of say on that one, maybe [we should] be a little harder,” Herman said after the game. “We have to be ready every night, it’s a good league. There’s no bad teams in this league, so I think next time we’re up, we’re supposed to be ready.”

Two other players other than Herman that we were to play on Saturday were a pair of rookies in Zach Wilson and Harrison Lodewyk. Wilson even earned himself the game’s third star, as he was buzzing around the ice in one of his better games in his young rookie career. Wilson dove in the crease to score the Raiders’ third goal in the contest, his second of the season.

Lodewyk also got his second of the year, blocking a breakout pass out of the Tigers’ zone and promptly scoring with a low and accurate wrist shot.

“It’s good to see those guys get rewarded there, they work hard everyday in practice,” Herman said. “Kudos to them. It’s huge for our team when those guys step up and make big plays like that.”

In his 17th straight appearance, Raiders goaltender Tikhon Chaika made 21 saves on 26 shots for the defeat. Garin Bjorklund made 31 saves on 35 shots for the Tigers’ victory.
