The John Paul II Collegiate (JPII) junior boys and junior girls basketball teams took home dual gold medals over the weekend in Lloydminster.

Both teams won each of their three games through the weekend schedule on their way to the top of the podium with each of the victories coming in double-digit fashion.

Junior girls

The junior girls opened the weekend with a 50-12 win over Lloydminster’s E.S. Laird, before continuing their roll Saturday topping Saskatoon’s College Park 41-30 in the semi-final, and Bishop Lloyd 44-20 in the final.

Head coach of the Crusaders junior girls, Kristina Binette said she was proud of the way the team was able to come together with a strong showing at both ends of the floor.

“The team played really well this weekend, [and] the athletes continued to learn and improve with each quarter,” she said. “The team pushed the ball up the floor, played solid defence and help defence, showed great hustle, and strong teamwork. They worked hard and had fun.”

The junior girls will return to Lloydminster for an exhibition game against Holy Rosary High School on Feb 5.

Junior boys

The junior boys also steamrolled through the weekend on a nearly mirrored weekend slate that saw the team top Bishop Lloyd in their opening game Friday, followed by wins over Holy Rosary and E.S. Laird in the semis and final, each by approximately 20 points.

Head coach of JPII’s senior boys team, Shalen Fox was filling in behind the bench for the juniors over the weekend. He said the team were able to really get everyone involved through the weekend thanks to strong finish and good energy right down the bench.

“I think it came down to execution and just a good balance between offense and the defence,” Fox said. “They really played well at both ends of the floor, and then being able to get everybody in (to play), they were all having some fun, and we had a little bit more depth too, which was also key.”

The junior boys will also return to Lloyd on Feb. 5 for their next game.

The JPII senior boys and senior girls teams will look to follow their juniors’ leads, as the teams will make their way to Lloydminster for a joint-tournament of their own next weekend.
