Motorists advised to watch for blowing snow Wednesday

Battlefords area drivers will need to keep their nose to the road later on Wednesday when blowing snow is forecast for the region.

North Battleford Fire Department deputy fire chief Dave Pratt said people should take their time on the roads to be careful.

“With the various temperatures, the snow on the roads will melt, then become ice. The roads will be very slippery,” he said. “So just slow down and be cautious. Obviously, we want everyone to be safe.”

Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang told battlefordsNOW people can expect to continue to see a pattern of temperatures swinging from cold to warm in the days ahead.

“The jet stream is sitting sort of north-west, south-east through the middle of the province,” she said. “Every time it wobbles, it puts you either on the warm side of the jet stream or on the cold side. That’s why we are getting these big swings in temperature.”

Temperatures are expected to get warmer Tuesday, accompanied by warm winds to bring the temperatures up to around the freezing mark through to the first part of Wednesday.

But then later in the day, Lang said, there will be a shift.

“The temperatures will start to fall in the afternoon, and then snap around to the north-west and we’ll get into some colder temperatures,” she said. “So we may see some blowing snow on Wednesday. It’s something to keep an eye on because those can polish up the highways very quickly.”

The weather expert said roads tend to be the most slippery right around that freezing mark level, even if the temperatures are just above freezing, so drivers should check the Highway Hotline if they are heading out on the roads.

This fluctuating temperature pattern may also continue into next week.

“There is a big trough like a U over Eastern Canada. That’s keeping the jet stream sort of in that same position,” Lang said. “So we are going to be wobbling back and forth between it.”

However, the system does appear to be moving away sometime next week, so the area might start to see more consistent weather temperatures going forward for a bit.

Stewart Schafer, City of North Battleford director of operations, said crews are on schedule getting the snow cleaned up in the area. He reminded drivers not to park on city streets at times indicated.

The city sanding truck has been busy responding to some icy spots to improve safety.

“We’re out there…,” Schafer said. “We noted that Carlton Trail was rather slick on the weekend, and we went down it a couple of times with the sander.”

He added the city is doing its best to keep on track of snow build up, particularly on the busier streets.
