Homelessness group seeking up to $60,000 from tri-community leadership

Both Air Ronge and La Ronge councils have regular meetings tonight and they’ll both address a request for up to $20,000 to tackle homelessness in the tri-communities.

The request is coming from Tri-Community Homeless Shelter Inc. (TCHS), which would like Air Ronge, La Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band to each contribute between $10,000 to $20,000. The funds would ensure the new non-profit can focus on short-term success in establishing a new shelter and long-term solutions.

“This organization’s sole purpose is to create a permanent solution for community members who live without shelter or housing security,” a letter to tri-community leadership states. “We have shared the work amongst ourselves to build governance bylaws and policies, look for fundraising/grant opportunities, create budgets, find possible locations and building ideas, and work on a communications strategy to combat NIMBY (not in my backyard) and gain community support.”

The letter mentions TCHS has already completed steps such as becoming incorporated, finding a partner to do accounting and establishing a board of directors. Next steps include working on requirements to gain charitable status and signing a memorandum of understanding with the accounting partner.

“However, one of our biggest challenges right now is time,” the letter adds. “Everyone working on these tasks has full-time jobs, along with other responsibilities.”

If the funds are approved, it would be used to hire a consultant or employee to achieve operational status and be put in a position to purse project and program-based grants. The TCHS believes such a commitment would demonstrate the tri-community leadership’s willingness to care for the area’s most vulnerable residents.

larongeNOW reached out to Cherise Chrispen, who sent the letter to leadership, for more information about TCHS. A media interview request was declined.
