Raiders ready for back-to-back against Pats

Jan 25, 2022 | 12:00 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders might get 2021 Subway Hub Centre flashbacks as they head to the Brandt Centre for two straight games this week, as they’ll battle the Regina Pats on Tuesday and Friday nights.

The Raiders (15-21-1-1, 32 points) are currently one point ahead of the Pats (15-17-0-1, 31 points) in the WHL Eastern Conference standings, but the Pats have played five less games than the Raiders.

The Raiders are coming off a three-game losing streak, losing to the top two teams in the conference in the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-1 Jan. 18, the Winnipeg ICE 5-2 on Jan. 21 before a 6-4 defeat to the last place Medicine Hat Tigers on Jan. 22.

The Raiders are 1-3 against the Pats so far this year, with their lone win coming at the Art Hauser Centre Dec. 3 in a big 5-2 victory. Tikhon Chaika made 45 saves in the victory, while former Pat Colonel Cale Sanders had a pair of goals, and Keaton Sorenson had a goal and two helpers.

The Pats won the other three games, 3-1 and 5-2 to start the season on Oct. 1-2, and a 5-2 revenge game on Dec. 10.

Like he is for most teams, Connor Bedard has been a thorn in the Raiders’ side. He has three goals and an assist in the three games he’s played against the Raiders this year. But despite the output, he doesn’t lead the Pats in points in the season series as Ryker Evans and Stanislav Svozil both have five assists.

Prince Albert’s Tanner Howe has two goals in four games against his hometown Raiders this year. Despite being a late-birthday 16-year-old rookie, Howe has 14 goals and 31 points in 29 games for the Pats.

Former Regina Pat Jordan Weal was named to the Olympic roster as well. Weal played for the Pats from 2008-12, had two 100-plus point seasons (and one that was 96), before heading to the AHL and NHL with the Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, Arizona Coyotes and the Montreal Canadiens’ organizations. He’s currently playing for AK Bars Kazan in the KHL.

Check out voice of the Raiders’ Rob Mahon’s call of the action on CKBI, starting at 6:30 p.m. tonight and for Friday’s game.
