“We should tackle this problem right away”: City of P.A. looking to clear blind spots created from snow piles

A big focus right now for the City of Prince Albert is removing all the blind spots created by snow piles.

Mayor Greg Dionne brought the issue up at Monday’s council meeting after personally hearing about multiple accidents caused by people driving too far into intersections to see whether there was oncoming traffic.

paNOW reached out to P.A.’s police service to confirm how many accidents there have been over the past week, however, we didn’t receive a response in time.

Dionne said the city is partially to blame, but private contractors have also been part of the problem.

“Because of the cost of moving it, lots of our local businesses have decided to store it on their property, which is no issue, they’re allowed to do that, but can’t put it by intersections.”

Piles have been popping up across P.A. as the city continues to deal with the large volume of snow it’s received so far this winter.

As of Jan. 24, two feet of snow had fallen across the community.

Snow on Sidewalks

Another issue the city wants to see fixed is the number of sidewalks being buried by snow.

City crews aren’t responsible for clearing pathways, instead, homeowners and property owners are required to do so.

The large amount of snow, along with the terrible conditions on these sidewalks, has forced many to walk directly on the roads.

Dionne noted, he’s seen what should have been a sidewalk near 28th Street being turned into a dumping ground for snow.

“There’s a perfect example of a private contractor pushing the snow out of that parking lot onto the sidewalk, and they didn’t clean it, it drifted in, so it doesn’t look like there’s a sidewalk.”

To fix this issue, Dionne explained they plan on tightening the bylaw to ensure those responsible either clear their path or get punished, potentially with a fine.

“Come on, you had your plow there, you blocked the sidewalk, you clean it.”
