NB Fire Dept. responds to gas leak at CUplex facilities

Jan 28, 2022 | 5:10 PM

The North Battleford Fire Department was on the scene at the Credit Union CUplex facilities Thursday at about 10:22 a.m. after a gas leak was reported.

The multi-purpose complex houses the Dekker Centre, the Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre, the NationsWEST Field House and the Northland Power Curling Centre.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

North Battleford Fire Chief Lindsay Holm said a vehicle struck a gas line behind the Dekker Centre, which caused the leak.

“It was one of the main lines that serves the facility, so it was a rather large line that had ruptured,” he told battlefordsNOW.

The CUplex was quickly evacuated to make sure everyone was safe, as there was the potential for the gas in the air to enter the facilities through the ventilation system.

Holm said while the evacuation was underway, the fire department and SaskEnergy dealt with the leak.

“Our crews were also able to isolate the leak,” he said. “They were able to shut down the valve that controls the gas flow to the structure, so that the gas was not being released.”

The fire department crews quickly ventilated the facility and were able to mitigate any gas infiltration into the building without any incident.

The City of North Battleford confirmed the NationsWEST Field House and the Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre were able to reopen again for use at 12 p.m., Thursday after everything was resolved.

The city notified the public about the leak through the Voyent Alert notification system.

Holm reminds homeowners to always take action if they believe they may have a gas leak at any time for everyone’s safety.

“If something like that does happen, the best advice I can give is to call 911 as quick as possible to start our response,” he said.

People need to be sure to evacuate the area so that there is no risk of either inhaling the natural gas or a fire explosion.

“A quick notification of the fire department is essential,” Holm said. “We will arrive as quick as we can to deal with the situation, and we will also notify any other agency that we feel would be appropriate to respond, to help alleviate the gas leak.”
