Broncos pick up another win at home as Red Wings fly into EPA

Jan 30, 2022 | 9:48 AM

The winning streak continues for the Humboldt Broncos as they finished off January with another win at home against the Weyburn Red Wings last night.

The Broncos have been consistent with home-ice wins throughout the season with only three losses out of 21 so far during the regular season.

With 10 games coming up in February, half of which will be on home ice, head coach Scott Barney told northeastNOW they will be keeping the pedal down as they wrap up the regular season as they work to stay focused.

“There’s 12 good teams in the league…we’re always going to get every team’s best effort and just gotta be focused for 60 minutes.”

The Broncos are currently 34-11-0-0 with 68 points as they maintain first the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

With only four points separating the first place Broncos from the second place Estevan Bruins, an additional 24 points are now up for grabs.

The Broncos came out hot on Saturday night with two goals in the first with Landen Stromme scoring his first goal of his first season of his SJHL career and Cage Newans following up with his 12th of the season.

Stromme told northeastNOW after the game that now the pressure is off and he has more confidence going forward for the rest of the season as the Broncos work to maintain first place in the SJHL. Stromme would also pick up player of the game honours for his efforts.

Weyburn would play some catch-up hockey with three goals in the second, including two power play goals after some penalty trouble for the Broncos, bringing the score to 3-2 going into the third.

A shot from the blue line from Noah Barlage on the power play would tie up the game 15 seconds into the third. Alec Saretzky would give the Broncos the lead and earn the game-winning goal with his 26th of the season two minutes later.

A penalty shot midway through the third for Connor McGrath would, unfortunately, yield no results as the Red Wings and Broncos continued to battle through the third with the game ending with the Broncos up by one.

Goalie Rayce Ramsay took the W in net for the green and gold with 27 saves.

Following the game, players would come back onto the ice, joined by coaches, Blaze the Bronco, and former Bronco Connor Swystun, for the Humboldt Broncos shootout fundraiser. Players and staff were auctioned off following Friday night’s win against the Yorkton Terriers with LeRoy original Connor McGrath going for $2,400 for top bid of the night and head coach Scott Barney going for $1,500 for the second-highest bid.

The team would raise a grand total of $23,675 with half going to the club and the rest going to the top bidder payout. First place payout totaled $3551.25 for the winning bidder and each goalie earned $2,367.50 for their save percentage bidders.

Stromme would continue his winning night as he saved himself from elimination by beating out either Ramsay or fellow Bronco goalie, William Dyke, to win top spot in the shootout.

The Broncos will look to expand their six-game winning streak to seven as they now prepare to welcome the Battlefords North Stars to the EPA for a Tuesday night contest. The North Stars are second to the Broncos in the Global Ag Risk Solutions Division and sit in fifth place in the SJHL with 51 points.
